If you're just starting out with needle felting, you should know that there are a few key secrets to making the process easier and more productive. You'll master needle felting quicker and get better results in your early efforts if you pick up on these secrets and take advantage of them.

The following are five practical tips for better results with your needle felting:

Be choosy about the materials you use

Some fabrics are more difficult to work with when it comes to needle felting than others are. It's important to start out with a fleece fabric or a wool blend and make sure that needles can easily poke through any material you're using when you're still learning.

When it comes to needle felting, you generally have to learn to master each individual material. Stick with one material that's easy to handle until you get the hang of it before moving on to other materials.

Only use wool that has been properly processed

Wool needs to be processed so that any impurities or debris are removed so that they don't interfere with needle felting. Wool needs to be processed by being run through a picker. Unprocessed wool could contain debris such as hay or dirt that will make the needle felting process much more difficult.

You might even want to take the time to further process wool you purchase for use by running it through the washer once with soap before you begin using it for needle felting.

Needle felt while using upholstery foam

Upholstery foam helps with the process because it makes needle felting more comfortable. A firm upholstery foam can take a lot of the headaches and discomfort out of learning to master needle felting for the first time.

Use a pen as a felting needle holder

It's important to have a good holder for the felting needle to make it easier to maintain accuracy, avoid mistakes, and stay comfortable. A single felting needle pen is ideal for keeping the felting needle held in place during the process of working with wool.

Avoid using wire armatures at least when you're first starting out

A lot of people insist on wire armatures, but these fixtures can actually make needle felting more difficult and complicated for beginners.

It's generally a good idea to get some experience needle felting without wire armatures to get the hang of it and to enjoy the freedom of not having to work around the wire. Contact a company like Felt Loom for more information and assistance.
