Pressure washing the roof can help you get rid of stubborn stains that other forms of washing may not help with. However, there is also a danger of damaging the roof if you aren't careful. Take these precautions to avoid the damage:

Use the Right Cleaner

Mixing a cleaner with your washing water ensures that you don't just rely on the force of the water to clean the roof, and this reduces the risk of damage. For example, there are cleaning solutions formulated for different forms of mold or roof moss. Avoid spinning on the balls of your feet since that also increases the friction between your soles and the roof, and hence the damage.

Choose the Right Nozzle

The right nozzle should deliver just the right amount of pressure; it should be enough to get rid of the debris without damaging it. A 3-degree wand, for example, spreads the water over a reasonable area of the roof so that the pressure is not focused on one area. This ensures that your roofing shingles don't lose their protective granules due to overwhelming pressure.

Control the Pressure

You also need to control the water pressure during the washing itself. There are two main ways of doing this. Increasing the height of the nozzle above the roof reduces the pressure while lowering it increases the pressure. You can also control the pressure at the nozzle using the motor valve or regulator knob depending on the one provided by your washer.

Wash In The Direction Of The Shingles

Lastly, washing the roof in the direction of the shingles is another way of minimizing the damage. It keeps the water flowing over the shingles instead of under them. If you point the nozzle upwards, water may get under the shingles and dislodge them.

Put On the Right Shoes

The potential damage doesn't just come from the pressure washing, walking on the roof can also damage. The damage comes not only from your weight but also from the friction caused by your shoes. Minimize the friction related damage by wearing the right shoes. The shoes should have soft soles that won't scratch the roof surface, and they should also be non-slip to reduce the risk of slipping and falling on the roof, which may not only injure you but cause further damage to the roof.

Hopefully, you will be able to clean your asphalt shingle roof without causing it any damage. Don't forget to discuss your needs with the washer rental company so that they can help you choose the right pressure washer.
